Ride on toys are toys that enable a child to propel oneself in his or her own power with the use of an electric or gasoline motor.
Popular among children, it is one of the perfect gifts you can get for your child as birthday present or even Christmas present. These toys are important in developing balance, physical fitness and coordination. Some popular ride on toys include sit-on riders, motorized vehicles, bicycles, skateboards, scooters, tricycles and rocker toys.
Children of different ages have appropriate ride-on toys. One must put into consideration the following issues when selecting a ride-on toy for a particular age group. The first factor to consider is size of parts and size of the toy. Secondly consider the motor skills required, thirdly, licensing and the level of realism or detail.
For children aged 12 to 18 months, stable ride-on toys are needed because they can’t peddle but will propel the toy by pushing it with both feet. Therefore their toys must be slightly wide and stable. It is however important for parents to be watch over closely while their children play with these toys to avoid unnecessary injuries.
Children aged 19 to 23 months are old enough to operate ride –on toys and they can sit inside and propel the toy by simply pushing their feet. However these toys are harder to steer and maneuver therefore a parent’s assistance is still required. This age group also prefers brightly colored toys that can also make sounds. Children of 3 years can peddle and steer the toys on their own with minimum supervision. Tricycles and bicycles are good enough for them.
Those aged 5 years and above are strong and will definitely ride scooters and bicycles without problems however caregivers, parents and teachers must be on look out all the time to avoid accidents from ride-on toys.
